A solvent-based concrete sealer uses a solvent carrier to drive an acrylic resin into the surface. It cures to a tough, glossy "wet-look" film that enriches colour and stands up to heavy wear, making it a popular choice across Australia for driveways, exposed aggregate and decorative concrete wherever a rich, high-gloss finish is the goal.

Solvent-based vs water-based, how to choose

Both types seal concrete; the carrier changes the result and the handling:

• Solvent-based: drives deeper into dense or older concrete, cures to a glossier, richer "wet-look" film, intensifies colour, and holds up well under traffic and outdoor exposure. The trade-off is a stronger odour during application and the need for good ventilation.
• Water-based: low odour, low-VOC and easy to clean up. If those matter more than maximum gloss, see our water-based sealers.

Wet-look gloss and colour enhancement

The wet-look is the whole point of a solvent-based acrylic. As it cures, it deepens the tone of the concrete and lays down a glossy, "permanently wet" appearance that makes exposed aggregate, coloured concrete and stencilled finishes pop. If you love how concrete looks just after rain, that's the effect a solvent-based sealer holds in place year-round.

Where to use solvent-based sealers

Solvent-based acrylics are made for the hard-working, on-show surfaces:

• Driveways and garage floors: high-traffic durability with a rich finish.
• Exposed aggregate: enhances the stone without dulling it.
• Stamped and stencilled decorative concrete: deepens colour and pattern.
• Paths and pool surrounds: a tough, weather-facing finish.

Coverage, application and drying

Solvent-based sealers are usually applied in two thin, even coats, with a light cure between coats. Allow a full cure of roughly 7 days before vehicle traffic, and let new concrete cure for about 28 days before sealing.

Clean-up is with the appropriate solvent, such as xylene, rather than water. Coverage varies by product and porosity, so use the Technical Data Sheet spread rate to work out how much you need.

Safety, VOCs and ventilation

Because the carrier is a solvent, these products have a stronger odour and higher VOCs than water-based sealers. Work in a well-ventilated area, keep away from ignition sources, and wear the PPE listed on the Safety Data Sheet. All products are supplied to WorkSafe specifications. This means, if you're sealing an enclosed space, a low-odour water-based sealer may be the better fit.

How to choose the right solvent-based sealer

Work back from the finish and the surface. Pick clear to keep the natural tone, or one of the 27 colours to unify or recolour. Then match the product to the surface, driveway, aggregate or decorative, and confirm coverage for your area.
