What is a water-based penetrating sealer?

Like any penetrating sealer, it protects from within the concrete rather than forming a film on top, so there's nothing to peel or flake, and the surface stays breathable with a natural finish. What makes this version different is the carrier: water instead of solvent, which means low odour, low VOCs and easy water clean-up.

Water-based vs solvent-based penetrating

Both carriers deliver penetrating protection. A water-based penetrating sealer keeps odour and VOCs low, cleans up with water, and is the comfortable choice for interior slabs and enclosed areas. A solvent-based penetrating product can carry deeper into very dense or older concrete but brings a stronger odour.

Penetrating vs topical sealers, in brief

A penetrating sealer is absorbed and invisible; a topical (film-forming) sealer sits on top and can add gloss or colour. If a decorative wet-look is what you're after, a topical product is the right tool. This page is for buyers who specifically want protection *without* changing how the surface looks.

Coverage and how much you need

Coverage depends heavily on the surface and finish, so treat it as a per-material figure and confirm it on the product's data sheet. Dense stone drinks less, open, porous concrete drinks more.

Work out your area, check the Technical Data Sheet spread rate, and add a margin for a second coat if the surface is thirsty. New concrete should cure for around 28 days before sealing.

How to apply a water-based penetrating sealer

• Prepare: the surface must be clean, dry and fully cured. A simple water-bead test shows how absorbent it is.
• Apply thin and even: by low-pressure sprayer, brush, broom or lambswool applicator (a roller isn't ideal for a penetrating product).
• Keep it wet, then wipe: keep the surface wet with sealer for a few minutes so it can absorb, then wipe away any excess before it dries so you don't leave a residue.
• Cure: allow the re-coat and cure times on the data sheet before use.

Natural finish or colour-enhancing

Most water-based penetrating sealers leave a natural, unchanged finish. If you'd like to gently enrich the colour while keeping the penetrating benefits, we also stock a colour-enhancing option, a middle ground between a fully invisible seal and a decorative wet-look.

How long does it last?

Penetrating sealers are long-life because there's no surface film to wear away; many protect for several years before a refresh is due. Re-coat intervals depend on the surface, wear and exposure. The product's data sheet gives the guide, and our team can advise for your specific job.
